Today is the feast of St. Martin de Porres, a Peruvian who joined the Dominican order at the age of 15 and never left. He desired to experience the martyrdom of the missionary; his superiors wanted him to stay in Lima, working odd jobs including: barber, farm laborer, almoner, and infirmarian. His love of all extended to every aspect of the animal kingdom (including vermin!) and he ran a cats/dogs hospital from his sister's house. He was a close friend of St. Rose of Lima.
St. Martin de Porres, you were willingly obedient to God and your superiors by staying in Lima ... help us to always willingly and joyfully obey God's will for ourselves. St. Martin, please pray for us!
